The History

The building’s history dates back to the 1600s when it was originally built as a farmhouse and coaching inn called the Horton Inn, later known as the Gunning Arms.
The building’s history dates back to the 1600s when it was originally built as a farmhouse and coaching inn called the Horton Inn, later known as the Gunning Arms. It wasn’t until 1853 when the Inn was converted to a private residence and by the 1930s it became a substantial country home to H R Greening Esq, an insurance broker. In the early 1960s it became ‘The French Partridge’, an award-winning restaurant run by David and Mary Partridge. Just behind the premises lies the church of St Magdalene, part of which dates back to the 13th Century. In September 2023, The French Partridge re-opened under new management after building an extension and carrying out major refurbishment to modernise the property whilst still honouring it’s history, traditional aesthetic and charm. The new team are passionate about your experience with us and look forward to a bright new future!
